Around the industry: Harvard, TAs agree to union election

  • California: Stanford University's Virtual Human Interaction Lab has created a virtual reality program that shows users the effects of climate change on coral reefs. Through the Stanford Ocean Acidification Experience, users follow the journey of pollution into the sea (Schaffhauser, Campus Technology, 10/19). 
  • Massachusetts: Harvard University teaching assistants and the institution last week reached an agreement on the terms of a union election, which will take place Nov. 16-17. Members of the potential student union are affiliated with the United Auto Workers (Flaherty, Inside Higher Ed, 10/19).  
  • Nevada: The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) has partnered with Lockheed Martin to connect UNLV faculty and students with space exploration projects, including NASA's Orion program. Lockheed Martin will provide up to $5 million to UNLV's Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering over a five-year period (PR.com/University Business, 10/15).
