Based on millennials' preferences for a good salary and work-life balance, they may want to think carefully before pursuing jobs as construction workers or actors, according to an analysis by U.S. News & World Report.
For the analysis, U.S. News surveyed roughly 1,000 people aged 20 to 34, asking them to rank nine job factors in order of importance.
The five job factors that matter most to millennials, along with their average scores, are:
- Salary (6.47)
- Work-life balance (6.3)
- Stress level (5.88)
- Upward mobility (5.42)
- Future job prospects (5.14)
After identifying what millennials look for most in a job, analysts compared the results with job data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the U.S. News Best Jobs rankings.
The 12 most satisfying jobs
Based on their priorities, the worst jobs for millennials include:
- Construction worker
- Community health worker
- Restaurant cook
- Nursing aide
- Sales representative
- Structural iron and steelworker
CareerCast also ranked sales among the worst jobs of 2017, based on environment, outlook, stress level, and income. However, more billionaires started their careers in sales than any other field, so it's understandable why students still pursue jobs in sales.
U.S. News' findings echo recent research by LinkedIn, which also found that millennials are seeking professional development opportunities and clear career paths. However, contrary to what the list above might suggest, LinkedIn found that millennials are flocking to the health care industry, which saw a 9% gain in millennial workers from August 2016 to August 2017 (Koenig, U.S. News & World Report, 11/16).
