The rise of the “ghost volunteer” points to tensions between campus units
Alumni relations and development staff face a frightening picture: Alumni engagement scores are low, and it's difficult to get alumni to come to volunteer on-campus.
However, those alumni aren’t as absent from campus life as they may seem.
A number of alumni already volunteer on campus—they just do it outside of traditional alumni relations channels. They may serve as speakers or panelists for academic or student affairs units, or help out as event assistants.
