Mid-level donors are some of the most loyal supporters that colleges and universities have. They give consistently year after year. While advancement leaders speak proudly of mid-level retention rates, they often cite a problem. Despite mid-level donors’ loyalty, their contribution levels stagnate after a few years, even though they have the ability to make more significant gifts.
Over the course of donors’ lives, undeveloped mid-level giving strategies put cumulative giving revenues at risk. The standard mid-level donor keeps giving loyally but does not upgrade to higher levels yielding meager returns. Most institutions face this situation. In contrast, those institutions that proactively move mid-level donors up the giving pyramid not only bring in major gifts; they also see the aggregate amount that donors contribute over their lifetimes increase.
Forward-thinking advancement leaders have taken the following steps to increase mid-level donor returns.
