Since 2008, pressure to shore up costs and operations has prompted dozens of colleges and universities to work with external consultants to conduct extensive efficiency audits.

These engagements—triggered by the recent recession and the resulting cuts in state funding, declines in giving and research funding, and increase in tuition dependence—cost institutions millions of dollars.
