Too many institutions limit vacancy reviews to simply evaluating whether or not to backfill a vacant position. However, this misses a key opportunity for savings. Vacancy is by far the best time to redesign positions, as shifting or automating tasks is simpler with no incumbent staff.

By asking unit leaders to review work processes as part of filling vacant positions, institutions can often refocus positions on higher-value work or sufficiently streamline roles to allow for less expensive or part-time replacements.
