Once the logical next step for young career advancers, professional programs like the MBA are in the midst of a tough decade. Even several years after the Great Recession, close to half of MBA programs are reporting year-over-year declines in applications.

But despite the MBA's application crisis, more young adults than ever occupy leadership positions in their organizations, and employers are twice as likely to ask for skills like accounting, marketing, and sales in early career staff.
