Veterans represent a high-need and high-ability population for COE units nationwide. They are more likely than non-veterans to have completed some college coursework without receiving a degree, and recent veterans in particular experience a greater unemployment rate than the nationwide average (American Community Survey and Bureau of Labor Statistics). Veterans’ benefits, however, offer these students substantial financial support. This financial assistance should equip veterans to complete their degrees, but many struggle to find high-quality programs to fit their educational needs.
How can you establish your unit as an education provider of choice for veterans? There are three key steps you can take: develop relationships with veterans, support them throughout their military careers, and speak to their needs in recruitment materials.
