Research Questions

  • What program elements are involved in bystander education and what scenarios do program elements address (e.g., violence and sexual assault, substance abuse)?
  • Which segments of the campus population do bystander intervention campaigns target?
  • How do other institutions assess the effectiveness of bystander intervention programs and what are the results to date?

Summary

Bystander education can inform students about how to proactively react to scenarios involving hazing, alcohol abuse, sexual violence, academic honesty, and other risky behaviors.  This brief examines bystander education programs at six universities, highlighting program elements (e.g., trainings and social marketing) and focus (e.g., sexual violence, hazing, or multiple scenarios).  Additionally, campus partner organizations, training curricula, and funding sources are considered.
