This report investigates academic disciplinary action procedures and processes for undergraduate and graduate students at private non-honor code research institutions. The project outlines reporting procedures, appeals processes, sanctioning measures, and violation trends. Common violations of academic honesty include plagiarism, unauthorized collaboration on assignments, and cheating, all of which are more prevalent at the undergraduate level.
Key observations from our research:
1. Plagiarism represents the most common undergraduate academic integrity violation while unauthorized collaboration on projects and exams occurs most commonly among graduate students.
2. Faculty members alert relevant administrators in student affairs, student conduct, or judicial affairs offices of academic integrity violations by submitting formal reporting forms.
3. Administrators convene disciplinary committees or hearing panels if accused students reject resolutions, the case involves a repeat offense, or if the potential sanction could result in expulsion.
4. Administrators employ academic integrity policy guidelines to prescribe sanctions on a consistent and case-by-case basis.
5. Institutions engage students in first-year orientations, ethics modules, integrity trainings, and student handbook overviews to improve access to anti-plagiarism resources and deter violations.
6. Institutions review and reform academic integrity policies to ensure cross-departmental consistency, properly equip staff with adequate academic integrity training, and heighten awareness of academic dishonesty.
