When the latest wave of student activism shook higher education, many institutions were not prepared to manage the volume and complexity of students’ actions. In many instances, policies related to campus activism were originally drafted decades ago and do not speak to the tactics of today’s activists. Responding on the fly—and without the guidance of current policies—can cause institutions to respond inconsistently or contrary to their stated values.
