Why the Generic Ask Gets Deleted

Alumni Rarely Respond to Vague Requests

Typically, career offi ces try to recruit volunteers by creating general appeals to help, which are subsequently sent out to alumni. Council analysis suggests, however, that the generic ask often fails because it requires alumni to respond and also implies that they should have ideas about how to help. Interviewees also report that some alumni may hesitate to respond to general appeals because they don’t know what is expected in terms of time, skills, and experience.
