- About: Shippensburg University is a public master’s university in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania with an undergraduate enrollment of 6,305 and a six-year graduation rate of 55%.
- Challenge: Shippensburg is part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), in which academic advising is seen as the purview of the faculty. Though faculty take their advising responsibility quite seriously, some initially expressed skepticism that more technology would make a significant difference in advising. In recent surveys, some students had expressed dissatisfaction with advising experiences. Administrators were looking for ways to provide more advising support so that faculty would have more ready access to additional, actionable information about students, leading to even more meaningful conversations with advisees.
- Solution: Shippensburg customized the SSC implementation and training process to secure early faculty buy-in. Using content provided by SSC, Shippensburg’s leadership sent frequent, reinforcing emails and timely tips to all faculty members encouraging them to use SSC across the term.
- Impact: Within one term of launching SSC, Shippensburg saw high faculty adoption—with 77% of pilot faculty finding SSC to be very effective and more than 45% actively using the platform.
